From Ontario Pork In the News – October 7, 2015

Ag Lenders 2015Yesterday (October 6th) approximately 60 representatives from Ontario’s agricultural lending institutions attended the annual Agricultural Lenders’ Conference which took place in Stratford, Ontario which was hosted by Ontario Pork and the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA). Amy Cronin, Chair of Ontario Pork opened the meeting by providing an update on Ontario Pork activities and initiatives. Guest speakers included Joseph Kerns from Iowa who delivered an engaging presentation on the U.S. pork industry and commodity markets and Maaike Campbell, a pork producer from Lambton county talked about the innovations and advances they have employed on farm and within their operation. Dean Gurney, Manager of Industry and Member Services at Ontario Pork talked about PED, traceability, CQA and unvented gas heaters. Several presentations/updates were delivered by the following representatives from OMAFRA:

  • Steve Duff, Ontario farm finances
  • Jaydee Smith, Ontario hog market update
  • Shannon McCarthy, export opportunities and challenges

The Canadian livestock estimate has been released by Statistics Canada.

Canada exported 2.8 million hogs in the first half of 2015, up 17.8% from the same period in 2014. There was strong demand for hogs in the United States as slaughter was 7% higher in the first six months of 2015 compared with the same period in 2014. According to the most recent US data, hog inventories increased 9% from June 1, 2014.
